Drilling around Ninth and Alder for two weeks starting as soon as Nov. 2

Engineers will drill small holes along the perimeter of the vacant property at Ninth Avenue and Alder Street to survey the location of underground utilities for future construction. Work will last two weeks and may begin as soon as Nov. 2.

Trucks will remove soil from the ground, which will generate noise and vibration. All work is expected to be performed on weekdays from 7am-5pm, with noisy work not beginning until 8am.

This will also involve the following changes to traffic:

  • Parking lane closure on the west side of Ninth Avenue between Alder Street and Fir Street.
  • Parking lane closures on Alder Street between Ninth Avenue and Terry Avenue.
  • Partial street closures at the intersection of Ninth Avenue and Fir Street, with construction flaggers and police directing traffic. Portions of sidewalk will be closed in the area and street parking lanes will be closed on Ninth Avenue near the intersection.
  • Parking lane closures on Fir Street between Ninth Avenue and Broadway.
  • Parking lane closures on Alder Street between Eighth Avenue and Ninth Avenue.
  • Alley closure near Northwest Kidney Centers.

There will be additional drilling taking place back from streets and sidewalks without impact to traffic. Please allow extra time to get around campus.

King County purchased the vacant 1.6-acre parcel of land at Ninth and Alder in 2024 to expand operations for Harborview Medical Center. This site will contain a parking garage, which the team hopes to open for use before the Harborview Bond Program closes parking stalls in the View Park garages in 2028 to build the planned new patient care tower on campus. This is intended to prevent a large drop in parking capacity during ongoing construction.

We intend to break ground on the Ninth and Alder parking structure in January 2027. We are working closely with the City of Seattle to ensure the city issues permits as quickly as possible to meet this timeline. Land usage notices on the site will go up soon.

Site work begins at 925 Terrace

Site work began at 925 Terrace Street Oct. 19, in preparation of building a three-story, modular office building. The initial scope of work will not involve street or sidewalk closures, though future work on site this fall will require closures.

Installation of the prefabricated building will take place in phases, with the first likely to take place in December, pending permit approval. These installations will lead to traffic stoppages and closure of street parking on Ninth Avenue, Alder Street, and Terry Avenue, with exact locations to be shared closer to the date of work. There will also be utility installation later this fall that will require closures.

Construction work is scheduled to last through at least April 2027.
