King County and Harborview Medical Center hosted a ribbon cutting and open house for two renovated floors of the Norm Maleng Building in January.

The renovation features 40 patient rooms, evenly split with20 rooms on each floor. Floor 4 is dedicated to non-critical care, while floor 7 handles critical care patients.

King County Executive Dow Constantine and Harborview Chief Executive Officer Sommer Kleweno Walley celebrated by cutting the ribbon on the two-year construction project that finished on time and within budget.

During his remarks at the event, Executive Constantine said: “This is going to allow us to provide better service [and] a higher level of care for the people of the county.”

Andersen Construction guided the construction of the project. The strong partnership between King County and Harborview led to the implementation of an expansive mentorship program and equity and social justice innovation plan that exceeded the small business goals, including the engagement of firms registered with the state Office of Minority and Women-Owned Businesses.

The Maleng project also included renovating two floors in the Ninth and Jefferson Building. Floors 9 and 10 in NJB feature more than 60 exam rooms, including specialty spaces like the rehab gym.

This project is one of King County’s earliest completed Progressive Design-Build projects, completed on time and within budget, and exceeding small business (including MWBE) goals.
