Leadership teams from the Harborview Bond Program completed an intensive multi-city tour of recently renovated medical centers to inform the upcoming transformational work at Harborview Medical Center. The delegation, which included construction, clinical, and administrative leads, visited hospitals on Louisiana and Florida that completed major modernization projects.
The tour focused on hospitals prioritizing innovation, accessibility, and sustainability. At University Medical Center New Orleans in Louisiana, the delegation observed innovative approaches to disaster preparation, incorporating resilient essential systems, and further ways to prioritize visibility and awareness in the emergency department and inpatient units. Meanwhile, the visit to Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, FL provided insights into the successful use of modular elements (e.g., pre-built walls with hospital equipment), non-medical focused spaces, and creative locations for emergency equipment and spaces.
Accessibility, standardized equipment, and a focus on the needs of the community served emerged as critical themes during the tours. The delegation also examined practical construction phasing strategies that minimized disruption to patient care, including temporary relocation plans and mitigation techniques for care areas.
Both King County and Harborview Medical Center, collaborators under the Bond Program, have committed to incorporating the best practices observed into the upcoming campus transformation. For more information about the program, visit HarborviewBondProgram.com.
