Early drafted #D rendering of new inpatient tower

The Harborview Bond Program submitted the major institution master plan (MIMP) amendment to the City of Seattle Department of Construction and Inspections (SDCI) in the spring. This pivotal action will help Harborview and King County proceed with the sustainable growth and advancement of Harborview Medical Center, the only Level 1 trauma center serving the Pacific Northwest region.

Development of the MIMP amendment started in 2022 and required work not only from the joint King County and Harborview project teams, but support from several community groups, including a local group of people living and/or working in the First Hill neighborhood, and assigned as the Advisory Committee.

The MIMP serves as the blueprint for the development and growth of critical institutions within city neighborhoods. It outlines key aspects of a campus’ development, such as, the height and density of buildings, infrastructure, and land use. Periodically, institutions seek to amend the MIMP to ensure alignment with an institution’s current needs and future aspirations.

The Harborview Bond Program plans to transform the campus to meet the growing healthcare needs of a bustling population by providing Harborview Medical Center with innovative, accessible, and sustainable facilities.

The Bond Program will meet four critical goals:

  • Construct a new inpatient medical tower.
  • Renovate essential services in older spaces at the hospital
  • Renovate County spaces located on the medical center campus
  • Build infrastructure that supports the campus and its growth

With the filing of the MIMP amendment, SDCI will now review the updates requested to ensure compliance with existing regulations and zoning laws. SDCI has provided ongoing feedback and recommendations to further refine the plan.
